On to the Showcase!

What name do you like to write under? R. K. Bentley

Where do you call home? Eastern, RI

What genre(s) do you write? Sci-Fi

What genre(s) were you drawn to when you were younger? Science Fiction and a dash of horror with Koontz but never as deep as King.

What were some of your favorite books growing up? Why? Hyperion was great because of the multiple stories it offered. Planet Pirates by Elizabeth Moon.

What are some of your favorite books today? Cherie Priest Clockwork Century books, John Scalzi books, James S. A. Corey books.

What inspired you to become a writer? I think if I had put my mind to it I could have been an artist but writing is easier to create, delete and create again. I adapted the Transformers Episode on my dad TSR-80 and started writing in Junior High and High School.

Where Weavers Daire

Ten years after the last war . . . Across the universe, on the desert world of Stuk’s Hollow, the New Year celebrations are in full swing with gatherings of Houses; the technological, the magical and the mortal. All the while invisible fingers pull the living, the dead and the banished towards the festivities. Salvage hauler Melinda Scott and her family are in the middle of an asteroid belt when her wild ride begins. Necromancer Spence MacGregor awakens from a long slumber only to find himself and his ship on a collision course with the Hollow. Techno Mage Roark Knoll is very dead but that doesn’t stop their adventures. From the cold and dark reaches of space to across the Wailing Sea, something old has been summoned. It’s just a question of who’s going to reach the festivities first and what secrets they will uncover. The Fallen Techno Mage. The Forgotten Weaver. The Lost Leader. The bloodthirsty evil. Welcome to Where Weavers Daire.

Tell us a little about how Where Weavers Daire came to be. Did it start with an image, a voice, a concept, a dilemma, or something else? The verse this book takes place in has been with me since High School so I had a lot planned out and I decided to start somewhere without much backstory. The main character finds something and off we go. The first revision started off with ten pages of scenes that never went anywhere until the last three pages. After getting suggestions from my writing group I tweaked it so the last three pages became the first three.

Which scene, character, or plotline changed the most from first draft to published book? WWD went through several revisions and the plots kept getting whittled down until I had jettisoned a lot. I pants my way through the book and paid for it. I think the ending changed the most since I was writing it up until a week before I published it.

Which character was the most challenging to create? Why? All the characters were challenging to create because I put too many in this one book with too many plot lines. I think Mindy was the hardest because I'm not an 18yr old girl and sometimes she was pushed to the side too much.

What do you like best about being a writer? I've started saying: I wrote this. I'm a laid back seller so I don't say I wrote this book enough as I should.

If you could collaborate with any author past or present, who would it be? What would the title of the book be? (If possible) - Give us a one-sentence blurb. I'd like to collaborate with Bennett North since she has creepy cool ideas and/or John Scalzi since I love his sense of humor. Title of the book: The deathly curse of the bone suckers. Sentence blurb: The undead world is up in arms due to a new monster that no one has seen but has been making their lives a miserable hell.
